Elizabeth David, another legendary name that keeps cropping up from our celebrity chefs, I think I first heard of her from Nigella Lawson's musings. I saw this book in a book shop in Bowness-on-Windermere a couple of years ago and thought it would be a good purchase to satisfy my curiosity. The book is a compliation of some of Elizabeth David's recipes and has been nicely put together by Jill Norman. I like the fact that all of the recipes have an accompanying picture as I find this helps me because I lack the imagination to picture the finished and therefore the motivation as to whether I want to cook it in the first place.
I have sucessfully cooked several recipes from this book. I love the Onion Tart on Page 90 and the Vichy Carrots on page 137 regularly accompany our Sunday Roast. I have also cooked probably the worst meal of my life from this book, Persian Lamb with Aubergines which was described as 'one of the best of all aubergine dishes'. Mmmmm I must have done something terribly wrong. It was bitter and tasteless and perhaps the worst aubergine dish I have ever tasted. Fortunately as neither Andrew or Mike like aubergines it was a dinner I cooked for myself one night so no harm done.
It has a really good selection of recipes in it and I really must start to try a some new ones. If you see it, and it can be found with the sale items sometimes, my advice is to buy it and give it a try.
